I strongly support the inclusion of instruction in world languages and cultures in the Iowa Core Curriculum (ICC) and appreciate the efforts of the Iowa World Language Association (IWLA) to address this unfortunate omission in the current version of the ICC.
I agree that Iowa’s students cannot be well prepared for the global economy within the context of our 21st Century world without the inclusion of world languages and cultures as a core content area in the ICC. I believe that world language and culture study should be a mandatory portion of the ICC, in addition to mathematics, science, social studies, and (English) language arts.
